Los Cusingos Nature Walk

The Experience

Located in the Alexander Skutch Biological Corridor, Los Cusingos Bird Sanctuary is a private nature reserve, where the famed ornithologist Alexander Skutch lived. The American-born naturalist and writer moved to Costa Rica in 1941, where he purchased this farm and lived with his wife and adopted son until his death in 2008, just eight days before his 100th birthday. Today, the nature reserve covers 78 hectares with trails of more than 2 kilometers that wind through botanical gardens, with Alexander’s home still at the center of the farm. A visit to the sanctuary is an opportunity to interact with nature slowly, through gentle trail walks and a tour of Skutch’s original home. Many birds, as well as other wildlife, may be observed within the property. Some of the most prized species that call the sanctuary home include the Turquoise Cotinga, Golden-naped woodpecker, Baird’s Trogon, Black-hooded Antshrike, Orange-collared Manakin, Riverside Wren, Spot-crowned Euphonia, tanagers and antbirds.
