Whale Season at Mauna Lani

As the koholā (humpback whale) returns to Hawai'i between Winter and Spring, survey the horizon while listening to ancient legends of Hawaii’s most majestic marine mammal.

Between December and March, Hawai'i welcomes masses of humpack whales, which migrate from Alaska to the Kohala Coast to care for their young in warmer waters. Watch for whales from the shoreline as you learn the cultural and biological significance of mother earth's marine mammals.

  • Meet at the North side of the Lobby at the House of Knowlege, then walk 5 minutes North to whale watching spot
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:30AM
  • Seasonal; offered only between Winter and Spring
  • All ages welcome

More experiential than Koholā Talk, Kalama Kai's whale watching experiences offer an up close look at whales and other marine mammals in their natural habitat. Watch the horizon for signs of humpback whales and listen to whale song through a hydrophone while learning about the biological, ecological and cultural significance of humpback whales.
